Description
XF86 - Tamiya - Flat Clear - 10mL Bottle
Tamiya XF-86 Flat Clear is a colourless acrylic flat varnish — a matte protective topcoat that seals and unifies the finish of a completed model without adding any colour. Applied over painted, decalled, and weathered surfaces, XF-86 eliminates the sheen differences between gloss, satin, and flat paint areas, reduces the silvering effect around decals, and locks in weathering pigments and washes under a consistent, uniform matte finish. It is the acrylic equivalent of Tamiya's aerosol flat clear coats and is particularly useful for brush-applied flat finishing on detail areas where airbrushing a full top coat is impractical, and for adding small amounts of flat base to any Tamiya gloss paint (X-series) to convert it to a flat finish in a 1:1 mix ratio. XF-86 is also used as a mixing medium to reduce the sheen of partially gloss or satin paints without changing their colour.
Tamiya Acrylic paints are a hybrid acrylic formula built on water-soluble resin — they can be thinned with water, isopropyl alcohol, or lacquer thinner, and clean up easily with water before curing. When thinned with Tamiya Lacquer Thinner, the paint lays down faster, dries harder, and bonds more aggressively to the substrate. See our Tamiya Acrylic vs. Enamel vs. Lacquer guide for a full breakdown of paint type differences.
- Final flat topcoat — applied over a completed model after all painting, decalling, and enamel or acrylic wash work is done; seals the decals and washes into the surface under a uniform matte sheen; eliminates the visual discontinuity between different paint sheens from different colours and application methods; particularly effective at flattening out any residual gloss from decal setting solutions on finished builds
- Decal silvering prevention — applying a gloss coat (X-22) over bare plastic before decals, then sealing with XF-86 flat clear afterward is the standard Tamiya-recommended decal workflow; the flat clear step eliminates silvering by sealing the edges of decals and removing the reflective gloss that makes decal film visible; XF-86 is the final step in this three-stage (prime / gloss / flat) decal application sequence
- Weathering pigment and wash sealer — applied in a very thin, lightly thinned coat over Tamiya Panel Line Accent Color washes, enamel weathering washes, and pigment effects to lock them in place before subsequent work or display; the flat finish does not disturb underlying dry pigment layers when airbrushed at low pressure with high dilution
- Converting gloss paints to flat — mixed 1:1 with any Tamiya X-series gloss colour to produce a flat version of that colour; particularly useful for mixing a flat version of X-22 Clear (producing a satin clear), flat black from X-1 Gloss Black, or flat metallic shades from X-series metallics when a non-reflective metallic appearance is needed on scale subjects
- Brush-applied spot flattening — applied by brush in small areas where a full airbrushed topcoat is impractical; useful for flattening individual detail areas, toning down a specific overly-bright area, or sealing a handpainted detail element on an otherwise completed model without re-spraying the entire surface
- Pre-weathering flat isolation coat — applied as a thin flat coat between the colour base coat and panel line / wash weathering steps to provide a slightly tooth-enhanced surface that accepts enamel and acrylic washes more evenly than a bare paint surface; the flat finish also makes it easier to remove excess wash during the cleanup step without disturbing the underlying paint
