Description

XF81 - Tamiya - Flat RAF Dk Green 2 Acrylic - 10mL BottlÂ

Tamiya XF-81 Flat Dark Green 2 (RAF) represents BS381C:641 Dark Green — the standard upper surface dark green applied to RAF and Commonwealth aircraft from 1940 through the end of WWII and into the post-war period. It is Tamiya's second and more accurate dedicated RAF Dark Green formulation, introduced as a more precise replacement for the older approach of using XF-61 Dark Green for British aircraft subjects. XF-81 is a deep, dark, slightly cool-toned forest green with less of the olive or yellow-green character of XF-61 — more blue-shifted, closer to the true BS381C:641 chip. The Scalemates cross-reference confirms XF-81 against BS381C:226 Mid Brunswick Green at the closest chip match. The modelling community broadly considers XF-81 to run slightly lighter than the actual colour chip, and a small adjustment of 5–6 parts XF-81 + 1 part XF-82 Ocean Grey (with an optional spot of XF-1 Flat Black) brings it closer to the deep, slightly cool-dark tone of the original specification. XF-81 also appears as a primary component in the documented formula for Soviet AFV green and Jungle Green (SCC 13) mixes.

Tamiya Acrylic paints are a hybrid acrylic formula built on water-soluble resin — they can be thinned with water, isopropyl alcohol, or lacquer thinner, and clean up easily with water before curing. When thinned with Tamiya Lacquer Thinner, the paint lays down faster, dries harder, and bonds more aggressively to the substrate. The hybrid resin chemistry means the paint film remains slightly soluble after initial drying — subsequent brush strokes can reactivate and lift the layer below if applied without restraint. For this reason, airbrushing is strongly recommended for large surface coverage. Brush painting is workable for detail and touch-up work, but requires a gentle, deliberate stroke and a fully cured base layer. See our Tamiya Acrylic vs. Enamel vs. Lacquer guide for a full breakdown of paint type differences.

  • RAF standard upper surface Dark Green — BS381C:641 applied to Spitfire Mk.I/II/V/IX, Hawker Hurricane Mk.I/IIb, Bristol Beaufighter Mk.IF/IIF/VI, de Havilland Mosquito FB.VI/PR.XVI, Hawker Typhoon Mk.Ib, Hawker Tempest Mk.V, and all RAF and Commonwealth aircraft in the standard Dark Green / Ocean Grey / Medium Sea Grey upper surface and Dark Green / Dark Earth two-colour and three-colour camouflage schemes throughout WWII; XF-81 replaces the earlier XF-61 approach for BS381C:641 with a more accurate blue-shifted dark green
  • RAF Fighter Command Spitfire and Hurricane — Dark Green upper surface on Battle of Britain Spitfire Mk.Is of 19, 54, 92, and 603 Squadrons (July–October 1940) and Hurricanes of 303 (Polish), 501, and 249 Squadrons; these aircraft used the original two-colour Dark Green / Dark Earth scheme that defined the visual character of the Battle of Britain
  • RAF Bomber Command — Dark Green upper surface on Lancaster, Halifax, and Stirling heavy bombers in the Dark Green / Dark Earth two-colour night bomber scheme; Lancasters of 617 Squadron (Dambusters, May 1943), 9 Squadron, and the main force squadrons of 1, 3, 5, and 6 (RCAF) Groups all operated in this scheme
  • RAF and Commonwealth fighter-bombers Northwest Europe (1944–45) — Dark Green / Ocean Grey upper surfaces on Typhoon Mk.Ib and Tempest Mk.V of 2nd TAF operating from airfields in Belgium and the Netherlands against German transport and armour; XF-81 paired with XF-82 Ocean Grey for the complete standard two-colour upper surface scheme of this period
  • Post-war RAF subjects — BS381C:641 continued as the standard RAF upper surface dark green well into the post-war period; applicable to Meteor, Vampire, Venom, and Hunter subjects in standard post-war RAF Dark Green / Silver or Dark Green / PRU Blue schemes through the 1950s
  • Accuracy adjustment formula — for a closer match to the BS381C:641 colour chip, mix 5–6 parts XF-81 + 1 part XF-82 Ocean Grey with an optional spot of XF-1 Flat Black; this community-tested formula deepens and slightly cools XF-81 toward the correct chip appearance, addressing the slight lightness of XF-81 straight from the bottle
  • Soviet AFV Green application — XF-81 is noted in several references as a starting point for modern Soviet/Russian AFV green applied to T-72, T-80, and BMP subjects where the wartime 4BO green has been replaced by a slightly darker, cooler post-war green; pairs with XF-4 Yellow Green as a lightening agent for scale-effect approaches
