Description

TAMXF6 - Tamiya - Flat Copper Acrylic - 10mL Bottle

Tamiya XF-6 Copper is a metallic copper paint in the XF range — carrying bright, warm metallic flake pigment within a flat acrylic binder, producing a vivid, polished-copper appearance without a high-gloss finish. It is the brighter, more chromatic companion to XF-28 Dark Copper in the Tamiya range: where XF-28 represents aged, oxidised, or heat-affected copper, XF-6 represents freshly worked, polished, or new-cast copper and bronze in their most vivid state. The flat binder prevents the mirror-like gloss of some metallic paints while retaining the full warmth and saturation of the copper tone, making it effective for both close-up detail work and airbrushed coverage on larger copper surfaces. It is one of the more versatile metallics in the Tamiya range, covering ship fittings, aircraft propellers, historical armour, fantasy figures, steam-era machinery, and decorative details across all subject categories.

Tamiya Acrylic paints are a hybrid acrylic formula built on water-soluble resin — they can be thinned with water, isopropyl alcohol, or lacquer thinner, and clean up easily with water before curing. When thinned with Tamiya Lacquer Thinner, the paint lays down faster, dries harder, and bonds more aggressively to the substrate. The hybrid resin chemistry means the paint film remains slightly soluble after initial drying — subsequent brush strokes can reactivate and lift the layer below if applied without restraint. For this reason, airbrushing is strongly recommended for large surface coverage. Brush painting is workable for detail and touch-up work, but requires a gentle, deliberate stroke and a fully cured base layer. See our Tamiya Acrylic vs. Enamel vs. Lacquer guide for a full breakdown of paint type differences.

  • Warship propellers and shafting — freshly cast or polished propeller blades, propeller bosses, and exposed shaft sections on 1/350 and 1/700 Royal Navy, Imperial Japanese Navy, US Navy, and Kriegsmarine warship kits; XF-6 provides the vivid, warm copper tone of new-cast brass or bronze before patination and verdigris weathering washes are applied over the top
  • Aircraft propeller hubs and spinners — copper or bronze propeller hub details and decorative spinner elements on early-era aircraft including WWI rotary-engined fighters (Sopwith Camel, Nieuport 17, Fokker Dr.I) and inter-war civil aircraft where polished copper and brass fittings were a common feature of engine and cowling design
  • Steam locomotive and boiler fittings — safety valves, steam dome covers, pressure gauges, and decorative banding on 1/35 and larger scale steam locomotive and engineering diorama subjects; the bright copper tone of freshly polished steam-era boiler fittings contrasts naturally against dark grey and black locomotive bodywork
  • Ancient and historical armour — freshly cast or polished bronze greaves, cuirasses, helmet bowls, and shield bosses on Greek hoplite, Roman legionary, and Macedonian figures in 1/35, 54mm, and larger scales; XF-6 provides the warm, bright tone of new-cast bronze before age darkening and patination washes are added
  • Fantasy and science fiction figures — copper-coloured armour plates, mechanical components, pipes, and decorative fittings on steampunk, fantasy, and science fiction figures and vehicles; the flat metallic finish provides a more realistic appearance than gloss metallics at normal viewing distances
  • Warship capstans, bollards, and deck fittings — polished copper and brass deck hardware including capstans, fairleads, binnacles, and anchor windlass components on WWII and historical sailing warship kits; at 1/700 scale, a brush-applied XF-6 highlight over a dark brown base effectively simulates polished deck bronze
  • Non-metallic metal (NMM) copper highlight — used as the top highlight coat in NMM copper painting on fantasy and historical figures, applied as the brightest accent over XF-28 Dark Copper mid-tones and dark brown shadow tones to create a convincing copper gradient without photographic metallic flake at competition level
  • Electrical cable and wiring details — the reddish copper colour of bare electrical wiring, contact strips, and bus bars visible in engine bay, AFV fighting compartment, and cockpit detail diorama work; used on bare copper wire details before oxidation washes tone it down to a more aged appearance
