Description

AKIRC969 - AK Interactive Real Colors RAF Extra Dark Sea Grey BS381C/640 17 ml.

A very dark, near-black blue-grey tone — RAF Extra Dark Sea Grey BS381C/640, one of the two upper surface colours in the Temperate Sea Scheme from 1939, and the definitive upper surface colour for Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm aircraft from the end of WWII through to the early 1980s and for RAF Coastal Command from 1943 until 1947. Part of the AK Interactive Real Colors Military range in the new 17ml plastic dropper bottle, RC969 is included in AK's WWII RAF Coastal Command & RN Fleet Air Arm Colors set and RN Fleet Air Arm Aircraft Colors 1945–2006 set.

RC969 RAF Extra Dark Sea Grey BS381C/640 has an exceptionally long service history. As one of the two upper surface colours in the Temperate Sea Scheme, it was applied to Royal Navy FAA aircraft from 1939 until the end of WWII and to RAF Coastal Command from August 1941 until February 1943. From February 1943 it became the sole upper surface colour for most RAF Coastal Command aircraft, continuing in that role until May 1947. For the Royal Navy, it served as the standard upper surface colour for FAA aircraft from the end of WWII until the early 1980s — including the Extra Dark Sea Grey/Sky scheme through the 1950s, and the Buccaneer fleet's overall finish in the late 1960s. It is therefore correct for RN FAA and RAF Coastal Command upper surfaces 1939–end of WWII; RAF Coastal Command upper surface sole colour February 1943–May 1947; and Royal Navy FAA upper surface colour end of WWII–early 1980s on the Sea Fury, Firefly, Attacker, Sea Hawk, Sea Venom, Scimitar, Buccaneer, Gannet, and associated types.

  • Temperate Sea Scheme upper surface colour 1939–end of WWII: RN FAA (Swordfish, Albacore, Fulmar, Barracuda, Firefly) and RAF Coastal Command (August 1941–February 1943)
  • RAF Coastal Command sole upper surface colour February 1943–May 1947: Liberator, Halifax, Sunderland, Catalina, and Coastal Command patrol types
  • RN FAA upper surface colour end of WWII–early 1980s: Sea Fury, Firefly, Attacker, Sea Hawk, Sea Venom, Scimitar, Buccaneer, Gannet
  • Pairs with RC968 RAF Dark Slate Grey in the WWII Temperate Sea Scheme upper surface
  • Lacquer-based, airbrush-optimized — smooth, opaque coverage
