A warm, slightly amber-tinted grey-green tone — IJN J3 SP (Amber Grey), the anti-corrosive variant of the J3 paint introduced in 1940 for metal surfaces on Imperial Japanese Navy aircraft, serving as the overall colour from 1940 to 1943 and the lower surface colour thereafter. Part of the AK Interactive Real Colors Military range in the new 17ml plastic dropper bottle, RC953 is included in AK's WWII IJN Aircraft Colors set with colours researched for accuracy by the author of the "Aviation of Japan" blog.

RC953 IJN J3 SP (Amber Grey) was introduced in 1940 as an anti-corrosive variant of the standard J3 Hai-Iro grey, specifically formulated for application to metal surfaces on IJN aircraft. It served as the standard overall colour for IJN aircraft from 1940 until 1943, at which point it was retained only for lower surfaces. It is therefore correct as the IJN standard overall aircraft colour 1940–1943 on the A6M Zero (from mid-production onward), J2M Raiden, D3A, B5N, G4M, and IJN types produced or repainted during this period; and as the IJN lower surface colour from 1943 through the end of the war on late-production types including the N1K-J Shiden, J1N Gekko, and continuing A6M variants.
