A light, slightly grey-blue tone — RLM 78 Himmelblau, the lower surface colour for Luftwaffe aircraft operating in North Africa and the Mediterranean Theatre from 1941, and also found on some Eastern Front aircraft that had received a tropical factory finish. Part of the AK Interactive Real Colors Military range in the new 17ml plastic dropper bottle, RC946 is the essential lower surface colour for Luftwaffe North Africa and Mediterranean subjects from 1941 onward.

RC946 RLM 78 was introduced around the spring of 1941 as the lower surface colour for the Luftwaffe tropical colour scheme in North Africa and the Mediterranean Theatre. It was applied as the underside base colour to fighters, bombers, and transport aircraft operating in these theatres, and was also found on some Bf 109 fighters that had been factory-painted in tropical colours and subsequently deployed to the Eastern Front. It is therefore correct for Luftwaffe lower surfaces in the North Africa and Mediterranean tropical scheme from spring 1941 including the Bf 109E/F/G, Bf 110, Ju 88, He 111, Ju 87, Ju 52, Fw 200, and associated types in Mediterranean and North African service; and Eastern Front aircraft that received tropical factory finish — principally Bf 109 fighters in the RLM 78 underside scheme.
