Description

AKIRC889 - AK Interactive Real Colors Light Gull Grey FS 16440 17 ml.

A light, neutral grey corresponding to Light Gull Grey (FS 16440) — one of the most important colours in US Navy and USMC aviation, used on carrier-based aircraft upper surfaces from the mid-1950s through to the early 1980s, and as a transitional overall colour on fighter aircraft in the late 1970s. Part of the AK Interactive Real Colors Military range in the new 17ml plastic dropper bottle, RC889 covers an exceptionally wide span of US naval aviation subjects across multiple decades.

Light Gull Grey FS 16440 was used for painting upper surfaces of US Navy carrier-based aircraft from 1955 until the early 1980s. From February 1977 until 1980–81 it was gradually applied as the overall colour of carrier-based fighters including the F-14 Tomcat and F-4 Phantom II. It was also the lower surface colour of USMC AV-8B Harrier II aircraft finished in the Land Camouflage Scheme from 1985 until the late 1980s, one of the colours used in the Ferris Scheme evaluated by the US Navy in 1976, the lower surface colour of US Navy SH-3 Sea King helicopters from 1971 until the 1980s, and the overall colour of the USMC CH-53D helicopter from 2008 to 2012. It is also a fair equivalent of M-485 Light Grey used as the overall colour of US Navy and USMC carrier-based aircraft from December 1940, and from mid-October 1941 until January 1943 was used as the undersurface colour of aircraft finished in the Blue Grey/Light Grey scheme. It is the correct upper surface or overall colour for F-14A/B Tomcat, F-4B/J/N/S Phantom II, A-4 Skyhawk, A-6 Intruder, A-7 Corsair II, E-2 Hawkeye, EA-6B Prowler, S-3A Viking, SH-3 Sea King, and AV-8B Harrier II across multiple schemes and periods.
