Description

AKIRC863 - AK Interactive Real Colors Rot (Rotbraun)-Red Brown RAL 8013 17 ml.

A darker, more brown-toned red-brown corresponding to RAL 8013 — the second of two closely related red-brown primer and interior colours used on German military vehicles during the Second World War, distinctly darker and browner in hue than the more reddish RAL 8012 (RC862). Part of the AK Interactive Real Colors Military range in the new 17ml plastic dropper bottle, RC863 is the fourth of the four essential German WWII vehicle interior colours alongside RC851 Elfenbein, RC854 Hellgrau, and RC862 Rotbraun RAL 8012.

Research by Tomas Chory indicates that the primer shade specified for Wehrmacht vehicles was changed from RAL 8012 to RAL 8013 in the late 1942–early 1943 timeframe, with RAL 8013 being more brown than RAL 8012. Both colours were in use simultaneously, with RAL 8012 described as dark red-brown and RAL 8013 as red-brown — the latter tending toward a warmer, earthier tone. In modelling practice RC863 is used for lower hull interior surfaces, floor pans, engine compartment components, and structural brackets where the darker brown tone of RAL 8013 was applied, as well as for late-war Sparanstrich scheme vehicles where the red-brown primer base is left partially or largely exposed. It is also used as a substitute or variant tone when modelling the inner surfaces of hatches, visors, and equipment stowage brackets across all major German AFV types from late 1942 onward.

  • Rotbraun RAL 8013 — darker, browner variant of the German WWII red-brown interior and primer colour
  • Used alongside RAL 8012 from late 1942–early 1943 onward; more brown, less red than RC862
  • Lower hull interiors, floor pans, engine compartments, and structural brackets across all major AFV types
  • Late-war Sparanstrich primer-exposed vehicles: partial surface finish on Panther, Tiger II, Jagdpanther, Hetzer
  • Hatch interiors, visors, and equipment stowage bracket details
  • Use alongside RC851 Elfenbein, RC854 Hellgrau, and RC862 RAL 8012 for complete German AFV interior painting
